This week on Photojournalism Now: Friday Round Up – Death of an Alchemist at Fox Gallery in Melbourne, Focal Point Gallery opens in Geelong, and a stellar line up in this month’s Photo Closer: Projections in New York.
Michael Prior – Death of an Alchemist
Death is not something we tend to talk about much in the West, let alone visualise what our own demise might look like. In this body of work which goes on show at Fox Gallery this weekend, photo-alchemist Michael Prior is effectively documenting his own death. The pictures in this exhibition and book, which have been made over many years, reveal the ‘effects of advanced myeloma’ (a type of blood cancer) on Prior.
When you understand the intimacy of the narrative behind these pictures, you recognise that beyond the ethereal beauty and mystery of these images lies an incredibly brave soul. Let the pictures speak for themselves.
Exhibition and book launch – Saturday 16 February 6pm
Until 3 March, Fox Darkroom & Gallery, 10 Elizabeth Street, Kensington
Masters of Australian Photojournalism
This group show is the inaugural exhibition for Focal Point Darkroom & Gallery in Geelong, about an hour’s drive from Melbourne on the Bellarine Peninsula. Works span genres and several decades and include black and white and colour prints. Many of these images will be familiar, but it is also heartening to see less exhibited works and photographers in the show.
It’s an impressive line-up of Australian photojournalists including:
Andrew Chapman * Angela Wylie * Bruce Postle * Clive Mackinnon * Craig Watson * David Johns * Ellen Smith * Glenn Ferguson * Glenn Gibson * John Casamento * John Lamb * Julian Kingmar * Justin McManus * Leigh Henningham * Melanie Faith-Dove * Meredith O’Shea * Michael Silver * Mike Dugdale * Mitch Bear * Nicole Emanuel * Nigel Hallett * Penny Stephens * Peter Ristevski * Phillip Stubbs * Simon O’Dwyer
It’s great to see a new space opening for photography and am keen to see the gallery.
Until 31 March, 46 Douro Street, North Geelong
