Portrait of an Interior
This group show features the work of seven photographic artists selected from various bodies of work: Jessie Boylan, Dave Carswell, Ellen Dahl, Lisa Garland, Matthew Newton, Sarah Rhodes and Noah Thompson.
The show’s geographic draw is lutruwita/Tasmania and its central theme is informed by Mills’ theory of the sociological imagination, with photographic portraiture employed to convey “the connection between personal challenges and larger social issues.”
In this context, the artists explore environmental issues such as mutton birding (above) and the extinction of the Thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) as well as human conditions like schizophrenia to “portray individual and collective stories that reverberate beyond their frames, speaking to the symbiotic relationship between people, place and the non-human world.”
